Village residents are furious that £324,000 of public cash is being spent on a river project to help fish instead of flood defences to protect their homes.Some householders in Darfield, South Yorkshire, have only just returned home after devastating floods three years ago. Residents have been frustrated by the refusal of the authorities to build barriers to stop the River Dearne bursting its banks and flooding nearby homes.
Now they have watched with incredulity as hundreds of thousands of pounds have been poured into an Environment Agency scheme to build a fish ladder designed to help fish swim upstream for breeding. Read more...
