Goldman Sachs accused of fraud

The US government's financial watchdog alleges that Goldman Sachs misled investors by failing to disclose conflicts of interest in mortgage investments it sold as the housing market was faltering.

The SEC announced it had lodged civil fraud charges against the company and one of its vice presidents - news that sent stock markets worldwide reeling.

London's FTSE 100 Index plunged 1.4% in reaction, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average in America fell more than 160 points at one stage.

Crowds cheer bomb disposal experts

They heartily deserve it. I've worked alongside a Royal Engineers Bomb disposal group and have the highest respect for what they do.

Thousands of people welcomed home 200 bomb disposal experts lauded as heroes for their work in Afghanistan.

The soldiers from the Counter Improvised Explosive Device Task Force (C-IED) were cheered as they marched through the streets of Didcot, Oxfordshire.

The small town came to a standstill for the parade, with shops closing their doors and local firefighters standing outside their station to pay silent tribute to the returning soldiers.

The unit has suffered heavy casualties, with the loss of seven men on this tour.

Teachers vote for tests boycott

Teachers have overwhelmingly backed a boycott of Sats tests, setting them on a collision course with a new government.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) have been balloting members involved in the administration of the tests - including headteachers, deputies and assistant heads - for the past month.

According to the results, 74.9% of NUT members who voted were in favour of a boycott, as were 61.3% of NAHT members who voted. Turnout for the NUT's ballot was 33.8% and for the NAHT it was 49.7%.

Robert Green, who has been working so hard to exposed the case of Hollie Greig, has been rearrested and taken to Stonehaven Sherrif’s Court. This has been confirmed by Seargent Adam Bulger of Warrington Police, who refused to address my concerns over Robert’s safety, despite my pointing out that he has gone back to the very courts that he has made allegations about.

We seem to have a situation that people simply get arrested and no-one is told – just like the Gestapo.

In case you would like to phone Warrington police to ask about Robert’s welfare, the number you need to call is 0845 458 0000.

And in case you would like to also give Grampian police a call, their number is 0845 600 5700.

Can you also get on to your MP, who, I’m sure, would be willing to help under present circumstances, no?

Charity's legal bid to name terror suspect

The charity Reprieve is today launching a legal battle to force the British Government to name a suspected terrorist who is being held in Afghanistan.

The man, who Reprieve today said is thought to be Yunus Rahmatullah, was one of two alleged terrorists captured by British soldiers in Iraq in February 2004.

They were handed to the US authorities, who flew them to Afghanistan where it is thought they are being held at Bagram Air Base.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the Data Protection Act prevents it from disclosing their names.

Mephedrone stocks seized before ban

Retailers are being asked to hand over stocks of the party drug mephedrone before it becomes illegal.

Council-employed trading standards officers in Norfolk have confiscated plant food believed to contain the drug and staff in Haringey, north London, have visited shops which they believe are selling it.

Councillor Paul Bettison, from the Local Government Association, said: "Council staff have not been idle ahead of the change in the rules. Work has been taking place to ensure supplies of mephedrone are handed over to the authorities so that this potentially damaging drug is cleared from shelves as quickly as possible."

Enterprise tsar Lord Sugar has donated £400,000 to the Labour Party, he announced.

The Labour peer said he gave the boost to the party's coffers to assist with its running costs during the General Election campaign.

Lord Sugar, star of BBC show The Apprentice, said he had donated cash during previous campaigns.

In a statement released to the Press Association, he said: "I can confirm that I have today agreed a donation of £400,000 to the Labour Party.

Machinegun attack at rave ‘was over trivial row about someone being pushed’

Police shooting inquest opens

A WOMAN killed by armed police wrote in her journal just days before she met her tragic end that she had a story in her head which ended with her being shot.

The long-awaited inquest into the death of Sevenoaks' woman Ann Sanderson began in Gravesend with jurors being shown CCTV footage of the moments leading up to the 37-year-old's death.

Known as 'Tosh', Ms Sanderson was seen brandishing what was believed to be a handgun in the town centre in the early hours of June 11, 2007.

She pointed the gun at CCTV cameras several times, set fire to one industrial bin and attempted to set light to another.

At around 2.40am Ms Sanderson was cornered in the car park behind M&CO by armed police officers.

After a brief standoff she was shot and died from a single gunshot to the chest.

Her inquest is set to continue today.

A former Royal Navy seaman has been given an Asbo – to stop him swearing at politicians when they appear on his TV or on the radio.

Martin Solomon, 64, has already spent the past two weeks in prison waiting to be sentenced after admitting he had breached a previous Asbo by shouting and swearing loudly in his home in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and disturbing his neighbours last month.

Mephedrone banned this week

The party drug mephedrone will become illegal from Friday, the Home Office said.

Following the completion of the formal parliamentary process today, the so-called legal high will be classified as a Class B drug with effect from April 16.

From that date anyone found in possession of mephedrone could face five years in prison. The maximum sentence for dealing in the drug will be 14 years.

The move to ban mephedrone, which is sold over the internet as plant food, comes despite the resignation of two Government drugs advisers over the issue.

Earlier this month, Eric Carlin followed Dr Polly Taylor in stepping down from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD).

In a letter of resignation, Mr Carlin said the decision to ban the drug was made despite there being "little or no discussion about how our recommendation to classify this drug would be likely to impact on young people's behaviour."

He added: "Our decision was unduly based on media and political pressure."

Calls for mephedrone to be made illegal came as a series of reports linked it to deaths across England and Scotland.
